Fall Market and Train Day

Hey Everyone,

We missed last Saturday because of the cold rain, but wewill be at the market tomorrow. It is going to be a lovely fall day, sunny andin the 50’s. This is the last regular season market for the year. (don’t worry,there will be markets through the winter) So come out and see all the farmersand load up on some groceries. Tomorrow is also a kids market, Harper and Co.will be providing the music, and Ashland is having Train Day. There will belots going on at the market and a couple of blocks away on Center Street.

We have a great selection of cuts of our all natural, allgrass fed beef, including steaks, roasts, ground beef, short ribs, stew beef,soup bones and more. Our grass fed beef is a healthy, delicious and localsource of protein for your families. Our animals are raised in a caring andhumane manner, living their entire lives out on pasture. We are raising lamb aswell. We will have this available in the near future, but we want them to grazea little while longer. I will announce in my emails when the lamb is ready.

We are Back

Hey Everyone,

We are back, fully stocked with delicious all natural, all grass fed beef. We will be at the Ashland Farmers Market tomorrow, and back on the co-ops next week. Thanks for being patient as we had to wait a little for our next batch of beef.

We have had a great fall, and hope that you all have too. Our cows began calving mid-September and within a month they were done. We have eight healthy happy calves running around. Check us out on Facebook to see pictures. We have plenty of hay, still have lots of grass, and we are splitting and stacking firewood. I think we are ready for winter.

Grass Fed Beef and Farmers Market

Hey Everyone,

We hope you are all having a great summer. I just wanted to send out a little note before the market tomorrow.

We are well stocked this week in beef for the market, including plenty of ground beef, steaks and sausages. We also have roasts, short ribs, stew beef and London broil. We will bring a big variety to the market, but if anyone has a special request let me know and I will make sure to have it for you.

Our garden is overflowing with tomatoes, so we are bringing bushels, and one basket of beets and a basket of red onions as well. All of our produce is naturally grown.

If you have not made it to the Ashland Farmers Market yet, please come check it out. It has really grown with an excellent group of producers and lots of regular customers. There is really a variety of produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, flowers and more. We have live music each week which really adds to the festive spirit. Hope to see you there.

Hope everyone is having a good summer. These recent rains are really helping our pastures and the cattle are doing great.

We are back from vacation and looking forward to the farmers market tomorrow. We are bringing lots of ground beef, steaks and sausages. We have some chuck roasts, bottom round, short ribs, etc. We also have organ meat, if anyone enjoys eating it, or some folks feed their dogs this nutritious meat. Let me know if you have any special requests.

Farmers Market 6/25/11

Hey Everyone,

Hope everyone’s summer is looking good. We have finally gotten some rain and the grass is growing again. Our cattle are fat and happy and our garden is doing great.

We will be at the Ashland Farmers Market tomorrow, with lots of excellent grass fed beef, produce and plants. We will be bringing plenty of ground beef again. We brought 40 pounds last weekend and sold out by 10:15! We also will have some sausage grillers, Bratwurst, Sweet Italian and Hot Italian, as well as great steaks and roasts.

Next weekend we will not be at the market, but will return after that. If you need steaks or ground beef for your 4^th of July celebrations, come on out Saturday.

Ground Beef is Back!

We will be at the Ashland Farmers Market this Saturday with our grass fed beef, plants and produce. We will have ground beef, so thanks for everyone’s patience. It has been hard to keep it stocked this spring. We will also have delicious steaks for grilling and some roasts for the crock pot. Our beef is all natural, all grass fed locally raised Belted Galloway and Angus. Check out our website for more info. We are also bringing some vegetable plants and hanging baskets to the market, and some squash, zucchini, beets, kale etc. from the garden. We will not have many eggs, as we have been selling them from the farm during the week. We are working on getting more birds to give us more eggs.

Weekend Events

Come see us this Saturday at the Ashland Farmers Market. The weather should be pleasant, a high of 84. Harper and Co. will be providing the music. One of our favorites, they played at the pre-season party we hosted this spring. Here is a complete list of venders and other info. We will have a full selection of our grass fed beef, including ground. The steaks and burgers are excellent to grill this time of year, but don’t forget about some of the other cuts that can be healthy and economical ways to feed your family. Remember our chuck roasts are only $5 per pound and sirloin tip roasts and round roasts are only $6.50 per pound. Here is a complete price list. If you have any special requests or know what you are coming for, it helps us if you email us and we will reserve the order and have it ready.

Sunday, we will be in Richmond on Broad St. by Jackson Ward for our second year at Broad Appetite. This is a real fun food festival featuring local restaurants and some of the local farms. The event is free to enter and then each restaurant is selling $3 portions of their signature dishes. We are not planning on bringing beef, just setting up to meet folks and tell them about what we are doing. Here is more info on this event.

In other news, we finished getting up our first cutting of hay. We got 755 square bales off of our big field and then about 400 off of the other two we cut, and we did about 400 for our friend and neighbor, who keeps his hay for his horses. We are thankful for our great help this year and are happy that project is done.

Farmers Market 5/21

Hey Folks,

We hope you all can come out to the Ashland Farmers Market this weekend. It looks like the weather will be great. (Thanks for all the support last weekend in the rain!) This Saturday Harry Gore will be the musical guest. Harry was a founding member of the Good Guys and is a wonderful singer and guitarist. We are very lucky to have him for entertainment.

We will be bringing goodies from the garden, such as beet greens, lettuce and kale, eggs, grass fed beef, and plants. We are currently out of ground beef, but we do have a great selection otherwise, including rib steaks and beef sausage grillers. We will have more ground beef next week. We also have our hanging baskets, 8” combo annuals and vegetable plants. The 8” pots are only $5 and will give you instant color for your planters, window boxes or in the ground.

We are enjoying the new location on the grass and the great selection of food from all of the venders. Last week Katherine made a great strawberry rhubarb pie with ingredients form the market. We do eat well when all this food is in season.

Opening Day- Ashland Farmers Market!

Hey All,

The Ashland Farmers Market opening day is tomorrow. Come on out for the food, fun and fellowship of our great market. There will be live music and the Hanover Master Gardeners, and the Town and Country Garden Club will be putting on a free workshop from 10-12 entitled “Discover if flower arranging is your cup of tea.”

We will be there with our grass fed beef, pastured eggs, produce and plants. We will bring hanging baskets that are overflowing with color, great gifts for mother’s day, also mixed annuals in 8” pots, one gallon tomatoes, vegetable plants and herbs. From the garden we have radishes, kale, lettuce and spinach.

Easter Lamb and Rainy Market

Hey Folks,

I just went and picked up our lamb in time for Easter dinners or your favorite meal. This is all natural grass fed heritage breed lamb. We have leg roasts that are deboned, loin chops and rib chops, lamb shanks, shoulder roasts and ground lamb. We also have a good selection of steaks, roasts and beef sausages. Please don’t hesitate to call or email to reserve your choice cuts. We only have eight legs of lamb available.

We will be at the Ashland Farmers Market this Saturday from 9-11 am. Hopefully the rain holds off. Currently they are calling for Saturday’s rain to be an afternoon event. We will be there with beef, lamb, eggs, radishes, kale and lettuce, as well as some plants from the greenhouse such as lettuce, tomatoes, pansies, perennials etc.

A couple of new businesses to point out that will be carrying our products include Mountain Road Nursery on 33 in Montpelier. Chris will be opening up this weekend. Stop by and see him. Also Harvest Market in Spotsylvania Courthouse. This is an excellent grocery/ health food store run by Tamis and Matthew Davis.

Farmer's Market and Joel Salatin Event

Hi All,

We are excited for another farmers market this Saturday, 3/19, in Ashland from 9-11 am. We will be at our regular location on Duncan St. behind the Southern States. This week we will have all kinds of goodies. We are well stocked on beef, and yes, we do have ground beef. If you are coming to get a lot, please let me know and I will make sure to save it for you. We have excellent steaks and roasts as well. We also have boneless leg of lamb for $11 per pound. Most of them are 3-4 pounds. Buy one to keep in your freezer until Easter, or enjoy it now with friends and family. Check out our blog for a great leg of lamb recipe. At the market, along with the beef and lamb, we will be bringing pastured eggs, produce plants (kale, lettuce, broccoli, spinach, etc.) and pansies.

We also want to mention an event coming up that we are participating in. April 2^nd, the community garden at Beaverdam Baptist Church is hosting a Sustainable Family Dinner from 2-7pm. There will be workshops, venders, dinner and speakers, including Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm in Swoope, VA. Joel Salatin is an innovative published farmer who can be seen in movies like Food, Inc. and Fresh. We think this will be an exciting and educational evening and wanted to invite everyone. Tickets must be bought ahead of time and can be purchased at Brown Paper Tickets. More info about this event is on Face Book.

New Rental Farm and New Help

We have begun fencing repairs and construction at the new property we will be renting. This farm has been abandoned for years. The fences are in disrepair if not missing and trees are beginning to grow up in the pastures, so there is a lot of grass and great potential at this farm. We are very excited to have some more room for the cattle and another chance to really help some farmland return to production in a healthy and sustainable manner.
We also want to welcome Anna to Dragonfly Farms. She is now working full time for us. We really appreciate her great attitude and willingness to work. She and her fiance, Michael, moved into the little house on our farm. Anna has taken over the chicken responsibilities, helps with all chores and projects and is helping us improve our gardens and landscape at the farm with her knowledge in permaculture. Look for her at the markets this season.

Ashland Farmers Market

Hey Everyone,

We will be in Ashland Saturday (2/19) from 9-11am at the regular spot behind the Southern States. We will be joining Macshack Acres, Keenbell Farm and possibly others. It should be a warm and pleasant day. We are looking forward to it.

We will be bringing our grass fed beef and lamb, eggs and pansies. We are fully stocked up on beef now, except for ground beef. We had one big order clean us out. Thanks for bearing with us. We should have more ground beef in a few weeks. I ate one of the porterhouses for dinner last night to try the new beef and it was delicious. We have all sorts of steaks, roasts and cuts such as soup bones, short ribs, stew meat and brisket. We will also have beef sausages. For lamb, we will bring ground lamb and shoulder roasts. We will be harvesting more lamb soon, so let me know if you are interested in getting some.

Our greenhouse is now up and running and we have started some trays of veggies such as kale, broccoli, spinach and lettuce. We will have some trays available soon, after they grow big enough and I harden them off, for your early spring gardens. It looks like the lettuce will be the first ready.

Our steers are grazing our hayfield. We did not take a second cutting in 2010 and the grass is great in January. We are using a single strand of temporary electric rope to keep them in 2 acre paddocks. This field will give us two to three months worth of grazing that is putting weight on the steers with no other feed.

Here is Ketch keeping one of our young heifers in check. This group of seven heifers have given Ketch and myself great training for working stock with a dog. They are a good group with the right energy level, playful, but not worked up.

Here is Brian's bull, Ajax. We are using him this winter to breed 9 cows and heifers.

During one of the snows, the weight of the snow pushed the electric rope down and the steers walked over it to eat grass under the oak tree and around the greenhouse. I am not sure how long they were out. I am glad they didn't walk out the driveway. They do come when called and I got this picture after calling them back to their paddock.

Renegade Market this Saturday (1/15/11)

Hey everyone,

Happy New Year to all. We hope this is a good year for you. We are excited and have many projects going on that we are enthusiastic about.

This Saturday the Renegade Market is happening in Ashland in the usual spot from 9-11am or later if we are busy. It will be chilly, but should warm up a little more than it has lately. I know that along with us, there will be Keenbell Farm and Macshack Acres and possibly others. We have a great selection of steaks, roasts, sausages and some ground. This is our all natural, all grass fed beef. We also have some excellent grass fed lamb. If you haven’t tried our lamb, come see me this Saturday. It has an excellent flavor, but not too strong. I have boneless leg roasts, cut into ~2 pound roasts, ground lamb and shoulder roast. We cooked a leg for New Years, delicious. Here is the recipe Katherine used- lamb recipe. I will also bring a few pansies that I’ve had protected. They could go in a planter for some winter color.

At the farm we are busy this winter. The greenhouse is almost complete. (Yeah!) It has been a big project that has taken much time, but I am really excited to get some plants going this February to be ahead of the game this spring. We also have some horses we are boarding and a couple of new ones coming soon. We are happy to have them come join us. Just as I am feeling crowded here, I have found some nearby pasture to lease. It has been a struggle to find available land out here. We are surrounded by excellent farmers and it is an agriculturally active area. There is not a lot of idle ground. I will be real busy soon fixing and building fences so we can move in with cattle. We also have the seemingly endless list of things to take care of in winter, before we get busy with spring.

I sent a previous email letting folks know we have changed our website and email addresses. We also have updated and changed our blog a little. Check it out and let me know what you think. I am open to suggestions.

So maybe we’ll see you this Saturday, or one day soon.

Leg of Lamb Recipe

The New Year found us enjoying a delicious leg of lamb with good friends. Our lamb is from Gulf Coast Native sheep and has a mild flavor and is very tender. We prepared it in the following way:

In a food processor blend:
2 cloves of garlic
1 tbsp sea salt
2 tsp dried rosemary
2 tsp pepper
2 tsp thyme
1 tsp dried ground mustard seed
4 tbsp of olive oil

Brush the paste over your (thawed) boneless leg of lamb and allow to sit at room temperature for 3 hours, covered in plastic wrap. Preheat oven to 450 Degrees and place uncovered leg in the oven. Allow to cook for 20 minutes at this temperature before reducing to 300 degrees. Carefully monitor the lamb with a meat thermometer, when the thermometer reads 140 degrees, remove the lamb and allow it 15 minutes to rest before slicing. For a 3 lb leg, this process will take approximately 1.5 hours.

The lamb was superb. We enjoyed this recipe for dinner and the leftover lamb made delicious sandwiches the following day.

beef and lamb for the holidays!

Hey Friends,

We currently have an excellent selection of meats, and I wanted to let folks know with all of the great opportunities to enjoy meals with friends and families. Lamb and beef can be the main course for a great dinner. Please call or email to order what you would like.

We will not be at the farmer’s market this coming weekend. We will be back at the market January 15^th, weather permitting. We do welcome folks to come to the farm to pick up meats, and I possibly could meet people in Ashland or nearby. Along with our grass fed beef, we now have grass fed lamb available. The lamb is delicious! We had the legs deboned, rolled and cut into 1.5-4 pound cuts. We also have shoulder roasts, some kabob meat and ground lamb. Here are the lamb prices. We are also well stocked with beef, including beef sausages. Here are our beef prices.

As well as coming to our farm, our meats are available thru Fall Line Farms and Local Roots. These co-ops are growing and have more availability and locations for pick-ups. Check their websites for more details. We also supply Dominion Harvest. This program delivers local food to your door.

Keep an eye out for a little change from us. We were able to acquire dragonflyfarms.com and will be switching over the website and emails. This should be a smooth transition. The new email and web addresses will be shorter and clearer. The simpler the better.

Holiday Farmer's Market

This Saturday, December 4th, is Ashland's Holiday Market. It will be a good time to do some shopping for up coming meals and for some gifts. We will be there along with many other of your favorite vendors.
We will have a good selection of our beef and lamb. Both our lamb and beef are naturally raised, grass fed and grass finished. We do not use any steroids or hormones, and we do not feed any grain. Under the Products and Availability page on this blog we have our prices listed. If you have any special orders or want to guarantee your favorite cuts will be there for you, feel free to call or email. We also will have a few dozen eggs. Our eggs are from hens on pasture fed a non- GMO grain. They are really good. Our hens have slowed down laying and we are not meeting the strong demand for fresh local eggs. Thanks for being understanding. We will also bring pansies, some perennials, and Japanese maples. Even though it is getting cold at night, now is still a good time to plant. These plants are all acclimated to this weather, and planting now gives them a better chance of getting established before next summer.
Our computer completely crashed on Thanksgiving. We sent the hard drive off to have the data recovered and it sounds promising. We were not current on backing up all our info, so I am temporarily technically short handed. I do not have my customer email list which has many names of folks who may or may not read our blog or follow us on facebook. If you can think of a friend who might be interested in what we are doing, please let them know. We could use a hand in spreading the word.
Two weeks from Saturday, December 18th, we will probably not be at the market. If you have any beef or lamb needs for the holiday, let us know, and we will try hard to make arrangements to meet you at our farm or in Ashland.

Lamb and Beef for the Holiday

We have picked up our lamb and it is good! Our lamb is grass fed and grass finished, raised without hormones or antibiotics.We have boneless leg roasts and shoulder roasts that will be excellent centerpieces for holiday meals. Our lamb chops are tender and tasty and the ground lamb and kabob meat will be excellent in a variety of recipes. Please see our price list on the Products and Availability page of this blog. Renegade Market!

Hey Friends,

Even though the farmer’s market season is over, there are still ways to get great local food. The Renegade Market season begins tomorrow. Dragonfly Farms and several other vendors are coming to Ashland, same location as the regular market, from 9-11am. We plan to do this the first and third Saturday of each month thru the winter. We did this last winter and found it worth our time. I believe Macshack Acres, Trails End Farm, King’s Acres, Keenbell Farm, Greenhearts Farm and possibly others are planning to attend as well.

We are a little low on beef at the moment, but we will have plenty of ground beef and a few steaks, roasts, soup bones etc. We will have eggs from our pastured hens. From the garden we will bring our mixed greens (kale, mustard and turnip greens), kale, lettuce and radishes. We have pansies, purple and yellow, and mixed violas for sale. Pansies are bright cheery colors for fall winter and spring. Around here if they are planted now, they can give you color until next summer. We have some perennials and Japanese Maples as well. I do not bring a full selection of perennials, but I would gladly bring what you are interested in if you let me know.

We have some beef at the butcher’s right now, so we will be fully stocked in a week or so. I am contacting folks that have orders in with us to take care of them. We have more beef going this fall, so let me know if you have any special orders. And we are still figuring out prices for the lamb. We received strong interest, so we will let everyone know the pricing and availability as soon as we can.

Fall Line Farms and Local Roots are kicking off their winter season. These programs are growing and improving in selection, locations and service. Dominion Harvest is another great local program that we have been involved in. We are providing holiday lamb for their customers this December.

Hey Folks,

I will be at the Ashland Farmer’s Market tomorrow from 9-12. I will have grass fed beef, eggs, kale, mustard and turnip greens, lettuce, radishes, pansies, perennials and Japanese Maples. Tomorrow is the last regular season market, so come on out and do your shopping. We have two holiday markets on 11/20 and 12/4. Also several vendors will be joining us for the Renegade Market. We come the first and third Saturday of each month thru the winter. We did this last year and it worked well.

We have some steers going to the butcher soon, so we will fill our existing orders first, and then can sell some quarters and family packs. Our quarters are about 80-100 pounds for $5.50 per pound. This is based on the finished weight and includes all butchering fees. A family pack is 25 pounds of mixed cuts for $150.

This fall and winter we are also offering all natural, all grass fed lamb for the first time. Please let us know if this is something you would be interested in.

Ashland Farmers' Market

Howdy Folks,

We will be at the Ashland Farmers’ Market this Saturday. It should be another beautiful fall morning. We are well stocked on ground beef now. We also have a good selection of steaks and roasts. We are bringing a bushel of our fall greens (kale, mustard and turnip greens mixed) and a half a bushel of radishes. We have some yellow pansies and mixed violas, perennials and Japanese Maples. We will have six or eight dozen eggs.

Another Great Fall Weekend

Hey Everyone,

We are looking forward to another great weekend. We will have more beautiful weather and lots of fun events around town, including Beaverdam Heritage Day just around the corner from Dragonfly Farms. We will be at the Ashland Farmers’ Market with a great selection of grass fed beef, pastured eggs and plants. We had an excellent day last weekend with a great turnout from vendors and customers. Hope to see you there if you can make it.

Speaking of eggs, have I mentioned that a few months ago we switched to a feed produced in Virginia from all natural products and non-GMO grains? The feed we had been using was natural and vegetarian, but they were not able to claim non-GMO grain. We are happy to be able to do this for many reasons. We still have more demand for our eggs than the hens can produce and we sell out weekly. Thanks for your understanding.

Farmers Market and Fall News

Hey Everyone,

We have finally gotten some rain. We have 5.75” in our rain gauge! Wow, this will sure help our fall growing season. We have some good crops in the garden that are coming along. We should have radishes at the market this weekend, and greens coming soon. Our pansies are growing bigger, maybe another week or so for them. We have yellow and purple pansies, and also a mix of colors of violas. They are in 4” pots. Our perennials have been cleaned up for fall. They are looking good. We have over seeded a couple of pastures and we have seed germinating. We are also excited to plow up an acre of our neighbor’s fields in preparation for next years pumpkin crop. We will plant it in winter oats and crimson clover, cut hay off of it in spring, disk it up and plant pumpkins next summer. We also have some cattle calving in fall. We have four healthy calves running around, and one more due. Above is a picture of a Belted Galloway, Red Angus cross.

We will be at the Ashland Farmers’ Market this Saturday with delicious grass fed beef and pastured eggs. We still have a good selection of beef. Stock up now for some good winter meals. Our beef is vacuum sealed and will keep at least a year if kept frozen. We are low on ground beef, but the following week we will have plenty.

The co-ops we belong to, Fall Line Farms and Local Roots are running a special for the membership fees. $75 will now give you a one year membership, instead of six months. This special runs through November 1^st, when the fall/winter season begins.

We do welcome visitors, and beef, eggs and plants can be picked up from the farm. So call and come out to the farm or the farmers market.
